My name is Rose, and I came to New York in 1992 in December. When I came here, it was something really amazing to see what a big difference it was from Trinidad to New York. My son was here first, and he looked for an apartment. The apartment was disgusting but we had no choice but to stay there until we found somewhere else comfortable. A friend of mine took me for an interview for babysitting. I started work, and it was tough, and a difference experience. It was kind of stressful, but we coped with it. Now we all stay together and do whatever we have to do. We work to make ends meet, but it was really tough to start life over, to go through that procedure from one place to the other. It is nice now, but it was very very difficult. Staying there all week and coming home on the weekends. The first two days we had a snowstorm, which is something I have never experienced. The food here was not so bad but you have to cope with it because it’s so different from home.
