NEVAEH BRANTLEY'S FIRST DAY

TRANSCRIPT

Why did you first come to the United States?

So, my story is a little different because I was born here, but I moved to Jamaica when I was very young, so those are my earliest memories. But I moved to the U.S. because most of my family was already here. My mom and my aunt was here, but in Jamaica I was with my grandma, so I just migrated to live with my family that was already over here.

Oh, basically, you were born in the United States, you moved to Jamaica. So you moved back to live with your family?

Yeah.

When you first came to America, what did you do first?

The first thing I did - I think, so it was me and my cousin who took the plane back. So the first thing when we were like five, we played on the playground, because we lived in an apartment and they had a playground out back. So, little kids, we were allowed to play in the playground the first day.

What was your last country or state like?

What was it like? The houses are very different. Most of the houses in Jamaica are painted extravagant colors. They’ll be yellow, or a bright red, or even purple houses, so it’s very different to see the brick houses that are here in America. So I think that was one of the biggest differences.

And then, some of the systems, like the sewer system that we have in Jamaica. It’s basically like you can see the sewer water, because it’s like a bridge, and then the gaps in between the bridges are basically the sewer water that flows throughout the whole village or town that we live in.

And then, the amount of animals, because there’s a bunch of goats that you’ll see throughout all the neighborhoods, or the dogs that you’ll see throughout the neighborhoods. So I think those are some of the biggest differences.

Thank you for your time.

No problem.
