TRANSCRIPT

I came to US in 2007. I have to say it was my first trip abroad. I had grown up in India with Bollywood movies, where almost all the shootings would be outside, it was super glamorized in my mind. I came for a festive Indian wedding, and I was super excited even though I was leaving my family behind. I had been brought up in Rajasthan, a desert area, and hadn’t seen much beauty around me. When we flew I was talking nonstop to my husband and was so excited. We landed in Dallas. We were driving, my husband’s friends came to pick us up, and I was so excited to see beautiful hill and valleys and whatnot. Well, we were driving and I saw nothing but buildings and buildings. It was super hot, and we came to the apartment. It was a one-bedroom apartment, and I could hear no sound all around me. My dreams were shattering already. I said, “I’m sure we know our neighbors around here,” and he said, “no!” The next day he left for work and I was not sure what to do all day, and that’s pretty much it. And that made me realize how important relationships are to people, and I miss them so much, and things I have taken for granted have changed. I think that’s what I thought on my first day.
