Ary Prasetyowati came to the United States from Indonesia and arrived in Seattle, Washington at the age of 30 in 1994, she is living in Seattle at the time of the interview.

Hi, my name is Ary Prasetyowati. I came from Indonesia. Yeah, I came here in 1994 just because my husband was accepted at the University of Washington. Back in 1993, the long-distance fee is very expensive, it was $3 per minute when you make a phone call. The money we spend to pay for the long-distance bill, we save it up to for my plane ticket.
That was March and it was cold and I came from tropical country which on average probably 100 Fahrenheit degrees. The first time I came here I was just like “oh my god!”
I think I was lucky because we came to Seattle, which you know is pretty much diverse. I don’t know, ya know, I dress like this, and I came to your district, I feel like I blend in really well because, I don’t know, your district, you see you know some people have different type of nation, so.
